Industrial Attachment:

The purpose of industrial attachment is to provide students an opportunity to develop applied competence in hospitality/tourism/events management through structured on-the-job learning experiences in commercial and/or institutional establishments. It will enable students to synthesize the theoretical and analytical content within the practice environment of travel, tourism and hospitality. The internship develops the learners’ abilities to take responsibility for and demonstrate initiative for their own learning experience. Students will gain credit for the learning achieved as part of the placement activity and will reflect upon and learn from the experience.

Industrial Attachment Placement decision is based on solely at the employer’s discretion and, where applicable, is subjected to the approval of Training Work Permit (TWP) issued by Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) (only applicable to International Students) or similar authority overseas. Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning and gain credit for their experiences during the placement. The decision regarding placement is primarily at the discretion of the employer, with certain conditions such as obtaining a Training Work Permit for international students in Singapore. The school may assist in sourcing internships, and if a student is unable to secure a placement, alternatives may be provided.

Once placed, students are expected to adhere to the rules and regulations of the organisation and complete the 6-month attachment. Premature dropout or termination based on disciplinary grounds may result in failure of the module and disciplinary inquiry by the school.

Why MDIS School of Tourism and Hospitality

The MDIS School of Tourism and Hospitality prides itself on training today’s interns, for tomorrow’s practitioners. Partnering the University of Sunderland (UK) which is currently ranked 2nd in The Guardian University Guide 2019: League Table for Hospitality, Event Management and Tourism, the School offers programme specialisations in tourism, hospitality, and events management delivered by an experienced and qualified academic faculty.

A firm believer in grooming leading professionals of the future through active learning approaches, MDIS invested in a 1,400 sq ft hospitality training facility called ‘Tropical Breeze’ to equip students with current knowledge and skills in preparation for their future careers. Tropical Breeze offers students the opportunity to adopt specific skillsets from the latest Opera Property Management System used commonly in Front Office Operations, well-equipped bar and barista facilities and a mock-up guest room for housekeeping. Another platform to prepare them for the real-world is offered at the institution-owned café, Brew & Bites.  Here, students are presented the opportunity to prepare light meals and beverages and develop their communication skills by engaging customers directly.

Apart from an active and industry relevant curriculum, students are also required to complete a 6-month internship at leading hotels, resorts, and attractions locally or overseas to ensure a real-world understanding of the complexities and demands of the hospitality and tourism sector.

Its academic rigour, strong practicum training, and internship placements indubitably develops extensive industry knowledge and critical professional competencies in positioning its graduates for long-term success.
