The New Silk Road offers immense opportunities
Uzbekistan in Central Asia borders Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan is an important trade and commerce centre on the ancient Silk Road. It is also home to cities that are diverse with both modern and medieval economic and cultural significance. Tashkent is Uzbekistan's capital and the largest city, housing almost five times as many residents, with Samarkand in second place.
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) by China focuses on the connectivity between Europe and Central Asia allowing for easy transportation of goods and services in trade, tourism, and agriculture. In September 2016, China inaugurated a railway line running through Uzbekistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan and intends to embark further on connecting Uzbekistan to Kyrgyzstan onwards to China.
The opportunity will allow Uzbekistan to interconnect with the whole railway system of Central Asia, the Commonwealth of Independent States, Europe with the South Asian railways. This will open enormous opportunities for boosting foreign investments and trade opportunities between different regions of the world and will have a significant impact on investments, trade and agriculture of Uzbekistan as well.
Set up in 2007, MDIS Tashkent is MDIS’ first overseas campus and is an institution of choice for students in Uzbekistan, Central Asia. From the initial batch in 2008, MDIS Tashkent now has more than 4,500 students from all the regions of Uzbekistan studying at MDIS Tashkent, and numerous academic degree programmes were offered in partnership with renowned UK universities. With the Belt and Road Initiative, there will be immense opportunities and potential for graduates and the people of Uzbekistan to engage in foreign investments, economic and cultural activities in turbocharging their economy.
